Poet Mao Jin ( one interpretation of this pen name: 'in the clearing by outhouse') was active on various internet forums during 2005 - 2008. When most of us littered online forums with complaints and woes of all sorts, our poet would quietly converse with a few fellow outcastes and post his verse as a challenge or a response to theirs in the next meeting of heart felt urges. By his own account, he joined student protesting in June, 1989 . Witnessing death of fellow classmates must have ignited a wellspring of long forgotten tradition in self-directed search on ONE liberating character as commoner's saving grace. After that eventful night, he went abroad and worked as an immigrant mechanical design engineer in Singapore, later continued graduate study at Nanyang technological Univ. while holding a day job. He has written close to 200 words of wisdom under this pen name. Some of his poems had an inimitable air of despair yet readers who interacted with him unmistakably sensed a penetrating cathartic force that heals and overcomes long buried fear and self hatred. He was in pursuit of a Ph.D degree in the field of evolutionary psychology in Shanghai.

JUNE BOOK REVIEW

>> Between Flesh and Shadow: A Review of Rayfish, by Mary Hickman // Book review by Anita Olivia Koester

"These are poems soaked in blood, poems that not only contemplate flesh and its weaknesses, but poems that have directly witnessed the cutting open of skin and muscle. Hickman slices, prods, pulls and distorts her lens–the flesh–in order to reveal the alterable interior."

Duende is the national literary journal of Goddard College's BFA program. Along with an issue published
